Allow, permit y let... What is the difference between them?

Allow y permit tienen significados y usos similares. Permit es más formal.

Ambos verbos pueden ir seguidos de objeto+infinitivo. EG We do not allow/permit people to smoke here.

Cuando no hay una persona que funcione como objeto, allow y permit van seguidas de gerundio. EG We do not allow/permit smoking in the airport.

En oraciones pasivas, que son bastante comunes, el sujeto puede ser tanto personal como un gerundio: EG People are not allowed/permitted to smoke. Smoking is not allowed/permitted.

La estructura pasiva con it, sólo es posible con permit. It is not permitted to smoke (NOT It is not allowed to smoke).

Let es la menos formal de estas tres palabras. Let va seguido de objeto+infinitivo sin to. Podríamos decir Allow me to buy you a drink (educado y formal) o Let me buy you a drink (amistoso e informal).

Let no suele usarse en frases pasivas. EG I wasn´t allowed to pay for the drink (NOT I wasn´t let)
